New Workplace Exposure Limits

Are you ready for the new Workplace Exposure Limits?

Earlier this year, Safe Work Australia announced that Workplace Exposure Standards will be renamed Workplace Exposure Limits starting from December 1st, 2026. Along with the new name, they have introduced lower exposure limits for 160 airborne contaminants to improve worker safety.

One key change is the reduction in the exposure limit for Carbon Monoxide, which is often detected with standard confined space entry gas monitors. The Time Weighted Average (TWA) for Carbon Monoxide will be reduced from 30ppm to 20ppm.

These changes mean that many workplaces will need to review and update their safety procedures and permit systems to comply with the new limits. This includes adjusting alarm values on portable gas monitors to reflect the new exposure limits for Carbon Monoxide.

In addition to monitoring Carbon Monoxide levels, it’s essential for workplaces to start discussing strategies to reduce Carbon Monoxide exposure. Applying the hierarchy of control can help mitigate risks:

  • Elimination: Where possible, eliminate the use of equipment or processes that generate Carbon Monoxide.
  • Substitution: Consider substituting high-emission equipment with alternatives that produce lower or no Carbon Monoxide emissions.
  • Isolation: Implement barriers or enclosures to separate workers from areas where Carbon Monoxide is being produced.
  • Engineering Controls: Improve ventilation systems to dilute and remove Carbon Monoxide from the work environment.
  • Administrative Controls: Adjust work schedules to limit the time workers spend in environments with potential Carbon Monoxide exposure and implement training programs on the risks and safe handling of Carbon Monoxide.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Provide workers with appropriate respiratory protective equipment where Carbon Monoxide exposure cannot be adequately controlled by other means.

By addressing these control measures, businesses can reduce the risks associated with Carbon Monoxide exposure while ensuring compliance with the upcoming Workplace Exposure Limits.
